OHIP and Ontario Health Cards

For identification and billing purposes, you must have an Ontario Health card for OHIP. If you do not have a health card, apply for one as soon as possible. Application forms may be picked up at your doctor’s office or from the Ministry of Health (217 York St., London, Ont.).

People relocating to Ontario from another province have a 3-month waiting period, during which they should be covered by the health insurance plan in the province in which they were previously located.

Refugees are eligible for OHIP as soon as they arrive in Ontario. Landed immigrants have a 3-month waiting period, during which their sponsors are responsible for their medical bills. Both refugees and landed immigrants should apply for OHIP as soon as they arrive in Ontario.

To get a health card, you will need 3 pieces of I.D. including a picture I.D. and something with a current address.

Dental Health

If you are receiving Ontario Works (OW) you are eligible for 2 fillings and 4 extractions every six months on an emergency basis. If you are receiving Ontario Works, please contact your worker. If you are not on OW but qualify under the low-income cut-off (LICO) please call discretionary benefits at 519 661-5910. If you receive ODSP please contact your worker.

Canada Dental Benefit is intended to help lower dental costs for eligible families earning less than $90,000 per year. Parents and guardians can apply if the child receiving dental care is under 12 years old and does not have access to a private dental insurance plan.

Depending on your adjusted family net income, a tax-free payment of $260, $390, or $650 will be available for each eligible child. This interim dental benefit is only available for 2 periods. You can get a maximum of 2 payments for each eligible child.

  1. You filed your 2021 tax return

  2. You receive CCB

  3. You have a CRA account

  4. You have direct deposit set up with CRA

SENIORS DENTAL

The Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program

The Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program is a government-funded dental care program. It provides free, routine dental services for low-income seniors who are 65 years of age or older.

Vision Health

EYE SEE…EYE LEARN

Eye See…Eye Learn® provides comprehensive eye exams by participating local optometrists to junior kindergarten students across Ontario. The eye exams are covered under provincial health insurance (or OHIP) when you show your child’s health card. This means that there is no out-of-pocket cost for the eye exam.

If the child requires a pair of glasses, they will receive a complimentary pair donated by Nikon Lenswear, OGI and your participating optometrist. you are receiving Ontario Works (OW) you are eligible for 2 fillings and 4 extractions every six months on an emergency basis. Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Testing

Unprotected sex is the most common way that people become infected with many serious diseases, including HIV, gonorrhoea, herpes, syphilis, chlamydias, and hepatitis. The proper use of condoms can greatly reduce the risk involved in sexual activity. They can also reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies.

Offers confidential STD and HIV testing along with free treatment. Free pregnancy testing and emergency contraception. They also offer STI counselling and free condoms. No appointment is needed and no health card is required for their drop in STI clinic.

Regional HIV/AIDS Connection

A public access resource centre that provides educational information on safer sex, safer needle use, counselling, and supports. They aim to positively impact the lives of individuals and diverse communities living with, at risk for, or affected by HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C (HCV). All of their programs are free and confidential.

Options Clinic Intercommunity Health Centre

While some doctors offer “confidential” testing, it is not anonymous. If you test positive, your doctor can still report your name to the health unit. The Options Clinic offers free anonymous testing, information, and counselling.
